This web site is dedicated to the world's most sought-after butterflies, the BIRDWING BUTTERFLIES.

The Birdwings occur from Sri Lanka and India in the west to China and Taiwan in the north-east and Australia in the south. The highest number of species is found in the Indonesian archipelago and New Guinea.

This web site covers all 33 species recognized by this author. All known subspecies are being treated and images of as many as 163 out of 191 named (plus several unnamed) subspecies are being shown. The photo gallery also includes numerous forms and aberrations.

To each image shown there is a brief description of the collecting locality of the specimen. The mentioned locality is shown exactly as it was given by the collector. No 'additonal' data (as often 'supplied' by some commercial collectors) have been added.

This web site now displays more than 650 photos of Birdwing butterflies and is probably the most comprehensive data base over the Birdwing butterflies available in the Web.

NB! Please remember that since 03 March 1973 the birdwings are listed on Appendix I and II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora ("CITES") . So, if you want to purchase birdwing butterfly specimens, make sure that the specimens are accompanied by a valid CITES permit!!! With the exception of Straatmana (Ornithoptera) alexandrae all species can be traded legally, so don't get yourselves into unnecessary trouble by purchasing birdwing butterflies without a valid CITES permit.
