Regulation of pH and mitochondrial metabolism by hypoxia inducible factor 1

A 3-year Cancer Research UK funded Postdoctoral Research Scientist position is available to join the research group of Professor Adrian L. Harris, working on the molecular and cellular biology of tumour hypoxia. Applicants should possess a PhD or equivalent degree and have considerable experience in molecular biology and cell biology. They should have the ability to work in a team.

The project involves investigation of the role of hypoxia inducible carbonic anhydrases in survival, growth and metastasis of cancer: and interactions with treatment modalities that induce hypoxia. Mitochondrial metabolic pathways have critical effects on cancer cell survival in hypoxia and generate acid precursors, whose interactions with pH regulation will be investigated. A range of techniques including enzyme assays, cell cuture, inducible gene regulation by siRNA and bioinformatics will be required.
