China’s First Tibetan Medicine PhD Graduates

“It is my great honor to be one of the first Tibetan Medicine PhDs. I will devote my whole life to the Tibetan medicine course and realize the value of my life”, said 35-year-old Ren Qing Jia ecitedly, holding the graduation certificate and degree certificate.


On the morning of Aug.2nd, Ren Qing Jia and Yang Mei, the first two Tibetan Medicine PhD graduates forged jointly by the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Tibet Medical College, dressed up their long-dreamed PhD suits and received the PhD degree certificates in front of the figure of the Tibetan medicine’s ancestor Yutuo Yuandangongbu in the courtyard of Tibet Medical College, .

Nima Ciren, their mentor and president of Tibet Medical College, said: “The graduating of the first batch of Tibetan medicine PhDs has changed the history that there has been no Tibetan doctor in Tibet. This achievement will be recorded in the Tibetan medical history forever. ”


It is introduced that during the 3 years of their PhD study, Yang Mei and Ren Qing Jia has learned gebneral courses in Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, finished degree courses including Tibetan internal medicine, diagnoses, External Therapy in Tibet Medical College, and learned ancient literature and Sanskrit.


39-year-old Yang Mei is from Naqu, Tibet. He has completed over 20 thesis and translated works, including “the Teaching Outline of Tibetan Medicine college courses” (2 volumes), “the Detailed Explanation of the Four Tibetan Medicine Books” (6 volumes), which have won the first prize of Tibet Teaching Achievements Competition, second prize at the state level, and a first prize of the municipality’s scientific and technological achievements. He also has participated in many scientific research programs at the municipality and state level.



“The soul and spirit of Tibetan Medicine that has existed for thousands of years will get new annotations and sublimation from us. We will contribute our strength and ability to the development and progress of the Tibetan medicine course in the rest of our life”, said Ren Qing Jia. This young man from Guide County, Qinghai Province passed the thesis defense with his thesis named “the Forming and Scientific Study System of the Classical Tibetan Medicine Book ‘Yuewang Medical Examination’"


Tibet Medical College started to recruit postgraduates in Tibetan Medicine since 1999. 36 postgraduates have graduated and 38 are studying there now. From the year 2004, Tibet Medical College started to recruit PhD students and now the first two have graduated. This year it has one PhD recruited.


A postgraduate student of Tibet Medical College named Duoji Renqing said: “The graduation of the first two Tibetan Medicine PhDs not only greatly promotes the development of higher education of the whole Tibetan Medicine; it also does great contribution to the inheriting and progressing of the Tibetan Medical culture.”
