    2002年，沃尔夫勒姆自费出版了一本1200页的名为《一种新科学》的书，书中他提出细胞自动机的思想，即在一个群体中，个体的自动组织与邻近个体间的 相互依赖是物理世界的一个普遍规律，用这种方法，可以模拟雪花的形状、贝壳的花纹、飓风的形成，而且他相信，在亚原子世界这个规律依然适用。
    尽 管雄心勃勃地宣称自己创造了一门新的科学，沃尔夫勒姆还是“谦虚”地称自己只是像牛顿一样，在浩瀚的真理的大海边拣到了几个漂亮的贝壳和平滑点的石子。但 是他张扬的个性和自吹自擂的作风使他本人和他的著作都遭到了许多人的抨击。但还是有科学家觉得，他是300多年来最接近牛顿的一个。
